OPIATE RECORDS NR. 13 - OUT NOW

Order: r_vergeldt (a) h0tmail (dot) com

BURNT CROSS - too many graves - 7" - £3
Opiate Records nr. 13 is out now. Their 6th ep, co-released with Tadpole Records and 4 other labels across the globe. Powerful, angry, tuneful and sincere anarcho peacepunk. Punk as a vehicle for outrage, not "just entertainment packaged tastefully". This time around there's also some seriously killer guest vocals by Maureen Farrell (Leopard Leg, Polly Shang Kuan Band, Jettatura) and a Rudimentary Peni cover to wrap it all up nicely. Fucking inspiring.

SGT. SLAUGHTER - they call me... - 7" - £3
"Irreverent and noisy hardcore punk from Massachusetts. There's an obvious Jerry's Kids influence here along with other early Boston bands. No traces of fastcore, powerviolence, or anything else here. Just hardcore punk with a clean, ballsy guitar sound and perfectly fitting production. Ltd. to 400 copies."

SELVHENTER - to fingre i kudden... - 7" - £3
"I'm at the point now that i see a band is from denmark, i just assume they're fantastic... and once again im proven right! Whereas some of their contemporarieshave drawn influence from late -'70/early-80s american punk, SELVHENTER pays homage to all the obscure and fantastic early 80s scandinavian bands, like the ones you would hear on the northern europe editions of "Bloodstains across DK" or "Killed by death". A nice mixture of punk and east thrash makes for a killer sound. Highly recommended - MRR "

MAAKUNTARADIO - lp - £7.50
...another winner from Finland. Not '82 inspired raw hardcore punk this time, but killer late 70s/early 80s Finnish punk in the vein of RATSIA, early EPPU NORMAALI and 013! This wouldn't have been out of place on the Bloodstains Across Finland compilation, not just due the way it sounds but also because it is that bloody good. Members of KAKKA HATTA 77 should you need anymore convincing...!!! - www.myspace.com/maakuntaradio

SACRED SHOCK - lp - £8
After a few killer (split) 7"s, it's fair to say this, Sacred Shock's first full length, was one of the most anticipated records of the year for many. Featuring members of HATRED SURGE, IRON AGE & ARMY OF JESUS, these Austin based punks don't disappoint and deliver 11 more hook ridden tracks of blazing hardcore punk destruction. - www.myspace.com/sacredshockatx

MEATLOCKER – lp – RSR Records - £7.50
Debut from this UK/Australian hardcore powerhouse. Members of Extortion and Lecky of Voorhees on vocal duties.

RUNNING FOR COVER – dark well - lp – 625 thrash / art of the underground - £7.20
...if you’ve been little impressed by the offerings of those that claim to worship at the altars of the like of Siege, No Comment and Neanderthal these last few years, you’ll be happy to hear: poserviolence this fucking ain’t! This is the fierce, fast, brutal, nasty, bleak, dark shit you’ve been despairing for when being dissapointed once again by yet another bunch of “wacky” ex-sxe kids producing some weak thrash marketed as the 2nd coming of Infest and co.... Or as Alex nailed it in his review on Collectize Zine: “Running For Cover’s ‘Human Ruins’ 7” was an unexpected powerviolence gem and this long-overdue follow-up hits the exact same mark, a 20-track system purge of unwavering disgust and despair that doesn’t quite know who to turn the gun on first. Though the brunt of their attack consists of thick, gnarled, painfully heavy riffage and bitter, bellicose rants, strange melodic twitterings and wandering Eric Wood-inspired basslines writhe semi-heard beneath the relentless cudgel blows, forcing the listener to stay on a caffeine-tweaked state of alert rather than slip into the droop-lidded complacency engendered by so many of the tiresome fastcore blunderers following in their wake.”

VI GRUER OSS - Pønkpopulistisk Propaganda - LP - £7
After an ep and split 10", Norwegian powerhouse Vi Gruer Oss return with another whirlwind assault of full speed ahead, no holds barred, hardcore punk. 41 tracks of constant pummeling, manic, fast, frantic, clinging on for dear life, unadulterated rage- heavily influenced by MOB 47 and DISKONTO. The lp includes a multi-page booklet with artwork and explanations to every song. Numbered out of 522 copies.

BRATPACK - Hate The Neighbours - LP - £6.50
A great mix of throwback 80s US hardcore and fast aggressive melodic punk usually more at home in California than the cold rainy streets of Nijmegen. Elements of Circle Jerks, early Bad Religion, Adolescents, RKL, Angry Samoans, Career Suicide and Battalion Of Saints come at you in fast and catchy tunes with killer hooks and smart lyrics pointing out the hypocrisies and ignorance of the world around us. BRATPACK share their singer with the also rather excellent CITIZENS PATROL, so if you like the one, definitely also check out the other! www.myspace.com/bratpackontheattack

CONTRAST ATTITUDE/ACROSTIX - split lp - £7
A great slab of wax of killer Japanese hardcore crust punk. While CONTRAST ATTITUDE pummel you into a clenched fist pumping frenzy with a raw distortion heavy assault of apocalyptic d beat noise thrash, tight drumming and super pissed off vocals - ACROSTIX run firmly in the footsteps of the mighty AMEBIX, proudly wearing their influences on sleeves littered with black & white patches. If names like AGE, FRAMTID and DISCLOSE or ZYGOTE and AMEBIX mean anything to you, at all, you mind want to snap this up before the rest of the kids finally wake up and get wise to this gem! www.myspace.com/contrastattitude / www.web-vortex.com/acrostix.html

DESTRUCKTIONS - complete destruckions - lp - £8 SOLD OUT- Anthology of this long gone cult band from Pori, Finland! This has all DESTRUCKTIONS studio recordings: Vox Populi -LP, their segments from the FINNISH SPUNK HARD BEAT and HARDCORE '83 compilations + unreleased demo tracks. Clearly a labour of love, this comes in a beautiful gatefold sleeve with comprehensive liner notes by guitarist Poko. Guaranteed to rip your speakers to shreds!

KANSAN UUTISET - LP + 12" - £10
SOLD OUT
Originally released on Rock O Rama back in 1983, Hohnie records has now given the amazing "Beautiful Dreams" lp a much deserved reissue. My own copy of the lp has been played to shit, so I couldn't be more stoked, but the real treat is the fact the Hohnie version comes with a 12" with previously unreleased, ultra raging, demos and an "80s style fanzine". You need this. Raw 80s Finnish hardcore punk at it's absolute best.

V/A HARDCORE '83 - compilation lp - £8 - SOLD OUT
Uber fucking classic compilation lp that surely needs no further introduction. Propaganda Records originally released this in 1983 and if anyone needs a reminder of the fact Finland had one of the best scenes in the 80s, just look at the names featured: KANSAN UUTISET, RIISTETYT, JAKKE & LATERI, ÄPÄRÄT, RATTUS, TAMPERE SS, ALAMAAILMA, KUOLEMA, BASTARDS, HIC SYTEEMI, FUCKING FINLAND, DESTRUCKTIONS, MARIONETTI, M.A.P., PROTESTI, SEKUNA, TAAKU and VARAUS. No serious hardcore punk collection is complete without this compilation, period.

V/A RUSSIA BOMBS FINLAND - compilation lp - £8 SOLD OUT
One of the four essential 80s Finnish hardcore punk compilation lps (others being HARDCORE '83, YALTA HI-LIFE and FINNISH SPUNK HARD BEAT), RUSSIA BOMBS FINLAND was originally released in 1982 on the legendary Propaganda Records. Like the previously discussed "Hardcore '83" this reads as a who's who of Finnish hardcore/punk, featuring multiple tracks by KAAOS, BASTARDS, ANTIKEHO, NATO, TERVEET KADET, RIISTETYT, 013, MAHO NEITSYT, APPENDIX, SEKUNDA and DACHAU. You need it, your friends need it, everyone needs this. If there's anything better than Finnish hardcore punk, I've yet to hear it.

KOHU 63 - sotaa 81/82 - lp SOLD OUT - £8
More legendary Finnish hardcore punk! 24 absolutely amazing smashers in the vein of LAMA! Includes their classic material from the first EP. Mini-LP and LP originally issued on Poko Records in 1981/82! Comes with superb artwork and liner notes. All hail Finland!

NAMENLOS - 1983-1989 - lp SOLD OUT - £8
Much praise to Hohhnie for releasing this great document of 80s punk life of a time & place that's still often overlooked and underreported. Namenlos belonged to the first generation of punks in the then DDR ("communist" East Germany) and suffered much state repression during their existence. The government was scared of these "negative decadent youths" and by 1984 managed to pretty much destroy the blossoming underground scene. Unusual for many East German punk bands, Namenlos lyrics were openly and violently critical of the state. Their songs reflected the bleak life in East Germany, and in "Nazis in Ostberlin", a classic song if their ever was one, they compared the government with the Nazi regime. The state reacted quickly: August 1983, members of Namenlos were arrested, accused of "debasing society and government institutions" and convicted to up to 1 1/2 years of prison without probation; a ruling which kickstarted nation-wide persecution of punks. This amazing lp gives the great Namenlos their well deserved time in the spotlight and comes with an amazing thick booklet with band history and many pictures, some straight from the secret police's files. It has original rehearsal-recordings in seriously great sound-quality &2 amazing live-tracks from their Poland-tour. Classic and important stuff.

FOREIGN OBJECTS - 7" - £3 - SOLD OUT
"Debut 7" from this Boston band featuring former / current members of LIBYANS, CONVERSIONS and AMPERE. The music is simple, catchy and to the point punk in the Dangerhouse tradition, but the vocals are what really sell this... incredibly unique and powerful, like Kathleen Hannah if she were really into Chavo-era Black Flag. Highly recommended!" - myspace.com/objectsforeign

THE POGO - police war - 7" - £3
"After a killer self released debut CD these Virginia punk bring you their 1st piece of vinyl and their best stuff yet! 3 ripping tracks of pissed off no nonsense punk". On Loud Punk records - myspace.com/3pogopunx

NUCLEAR FAMILY - 7" - £3
"3 ripping tracks of pissed off no nonsense punk3 song debut by Albany NY's best band. Melodic, eerie and tuneful punk like a more basic Wipers with very well sung female vocals" - www.myspace.com/3pogopunx

SSR - SEDITION SUB ROSA - 12" - £8 SOLD OUT
Newest release on the great DISTORT REALITY label. So new in fact that it only came in the post this morning! SSR play raw blazing downtuned dbeat crust punk and are made up of members of AGHAST. Shin at Punk N' Destroy picked up on the fact the photograph on the insert has them posing in a similar vein to KURO and that's definitely part of thewhat they are going for here musically! There's elements we've come to identify with the different 8os scenes that perfected their sound from the original DISCHARGE template - Japanese, Swedish and Finnish hardcore most notably - while the wild reverb-heavy vocals also bring to mind more recent bands like INVASION/DESTINO FINAL. The tense, crazed, all over the place hardcore punk is perfectly balanced out finally by a slighty (!) slower number that I swear sounds somewhat like 'victimised' by CHAOS UK!! D-beat punk destruction at it's finest - myspace.com/ssrpunks

CONDENADA - mother tongue - 7" - £3.50 SOLD OUT CONDENADA are fucking great "all girl queer punk band" from Chicago and after their raging debut on Lengua Armada and their split 7" with SIN ORDEN, they return with their third vinyl release. 4 more tracks of furious kick ass fast hardcore punk with lots of energy and power, all wrapped up in a beautiful screenprined sleeve - myspace.com/condenada

PRIMATES - control salvaje - 7" - £3.50 Their vinyl debut was both fucking raging and criminally overlooked! Let's see if the punks get get their heads out of the "Japan/Sweden" worship for two seconds this time and pay some attention shall we? Barcelona's PRIMATES return with another slap of totally raging, fast yet catchy as fuck, hardcore punk with some seriously killer female vocals and hooks. Fucking Spain just keeps delivering the goods, so start paying attention! - myspace.com/xxxprimatesxxx

BAILER - sing it like a victim - lp - £8 SOLD OUT
Emo from the hazy days of 2005. Elements of Policy Of 3, 400 Years, Boilermaker, Yaphet Kotto etc. fused into a more updated version of the sound. Collective Zine loved it, so if that means anything to you, this may be for you. Note the copy for sale is screenprinted on a grey background, not the blue as pictured, in case that somehow matters...? - myspace.com/bailer

BURNT CROSS - lp - £7
I've now got the last 10 copies of the BURNT CROSS lp for sale, so snap it up if you sti9ll need one!! Here's what MRR had to say about this great record: "from the band name, album title, and black and white cover featuring a pile of skulls, I'm assuming this isn't power-pop. Guess what--it's not powerviolence either. This is hard anarcho-punk that sounds a lot like EXIT-STANCE, LIBERTY or a tougher SWARTZENEGGAR. This band is a two-piece comprised of two brothers from the UK. It's pure DIY, recorded in the bedroom with an 8-track and drum machine. It's well done, and they have a solid political street punk sound that fans of CONFLICT will like. Good lyrics on a variety of topics make this a very worthwhile release. Good stuff." - myspace.com/burntcross

TRIOXIN 245 - 7" - £3
The 2nd EP for this band from Quebec. 4 trax of Motorcharged dbeat hardcore punk that even includes a Venom cover. Members of GERM ATTACK and BASTARDATOR. - myspace.com/trioxin245

MASAKARI - eden compromised - 7" - £3
"After one listen to Eden Compromised, it's not surprising to find that Masakari take their name from a battle-axe used in ancient Japan. The four songs that make up this debut 7” are as destructive as a blow to the skull with such a weapon. “The War Within” is a thundering, metallic slab of meaty riffs and pummeling, chaotic drums. I hear a lot of d-beat and crust influence in this song, and the others as well. Obviously Masakari take heaps of influence from giants of the genre His Hero is Gone. But Masakari are not a knock off; there is some nice mid-tempo open-chord riffing going on too, which is quite cool. “Forever Cursed” takes a slightly more hardcore approach, “Vanquish” and “Egoism in Harvest” round out the EP and are equally as heavy - the production of Bill Korecky (Keelhaul, Integrity) suits the band well. The former opens with ultra heavy slow riffs, the latter features impeccable drumming on display." - www.myspace.com/masakaripunk

IRON BOOTS - demo '04 - 7" - £3
"Grave Mistake revs up this third pressing of Iron Boots' incredibly solid debut, Demo 04. Initially issued in '04 as a cassette by the Virginia Beach hardcore act. Though these were seemingly the first songs the band recorded, they're pretty goddamn great and surprisingly fully formed despite usually lasting no longer than a minute and a half. It's mid-`80s-style NYHC with a modern touch. The playing is scrappy but hard, and the vocals are choppy and raspy yet actually have a bit of playfulness to them. There's nothing tough or overly moshy about this release; it's got the perfect level of the latter, actually. It's just energetic, well-done, scrappy hardcore songs that many bands haven't been able to compete with on their debut."

CONSTANT STATE OF TERROR - war with no end - 7" - £3

SELVHENTER - to fingre i kudden... - 7" - £3
"I'm at the point now that i see a band is from denmark, i just assume they're fantastic... and once again im proven right! A nice mixture of new wave punk and east thrash makes for a killer sound. Highly recommended - MRR " - myspace.com/selvhentermusic

YOUNG OFFENDERS/GIANT HAYSTACKS - LP - £8
The write up 625 did sums it up best really: "The much anticipated split between two of the Bay Area's best punk bands of recent years. Catchy yet pissed, melodic yet driven, both bands compliment each other's hook-laden anger. THE YOUNG OFFENDERS follow up multiple EPs and splits from the past few years with some brand new teeth-kickers, while GIANT HAYSTACKS contribute their last, yet best, songs yet. An instant classic - limited pressing, get it while you can". Two amazing bands, one fucking great split lp. I am still gutted Giant Haystacks broke up - but at least we've got some more great tracks to remember them by. Young Offenders meanwhile are still going strong and need to come to the UK already!

V/A SIX WAYS TO FUCK SHIT UP - comp. 7" - £3

DAYLIGHT ROBBERY 7" - £3.50
"After releasing one of the best punk/garage rock EPs last year, Daylight Robbery doesn’t let up a notch on this hot new 3 song recording. The A-side takes off with classic Dangerhouse- style punk with male/female vocals that bend and weave together in subtle melodic harmonies. Comparisons come and go with everything from X to Guerilla Angreb to Gun Club, but Daylight Robbery has this way of blending in more than just influences or retro/classic punk. The B-side (Circles) is one of the most haunting and atmospheric tracks that climbs to an almost insane intensity that underlines this whole EP. Red Tape will no doubt turn heads and have you hoping for a future Daylight Robbery full-length LP - residue" -

BURNT CROSS/AUK - cd - £4
This actually only came out today, but after hearing the superb AUK tracks round Darren's (tadpole records) a while back I've been looking forward to getting my hands on this puppy, so I made a point of walking into town to get this as soon as it became available. The
Burnt Cross tracks on this cd are all their songs of the "Brian Haw", "What Hope Tomorrow" and "In Nature We Trust" eps, and you know my opinion about those by now: fucking great songs by a fantastic band; political, sincere, no bullshit with killer tunes to boot. AUK are the 'new kid' on the block, or not that 'new' actually as one of the guys used to be in the great Scottish anarcho band ALTERNATIVE who did a 7" on Crass back in the day among others. AUK know how to write a catchy song, and like Burnt Cross they use these songs to express their to the point anarchist beliefs with great effect. Their tracks on this cd are frankly amazing, some more in a driving harder edged anarcho punk vein, some slower and melodic reminding me of OMEGA TRIBE and THE MOB, and all with killer guitar hooks and passionate vocals.
BORN AGAINST once wrote about punk: "once a vehicle for outrage, now just entertainment packaged tastefully"....and though the current excuse for what constitutes a "punk scene" might feel like that more often than some of us would like, Burnt Cross and AUK are two bands that buck the trend. Relevant, inspiring and recommended for all of you that look at the world with despair but continue to belief in fighting the fuck back - www.myspace.com/burntcross / www.myspace.com/aukofficialbandsite

2KOMPONENTZ! - 7" - £3.50
Catchy as hell, basic as fuck. Is there a better way to make punk?!
MRR gave it a raving review and I am with them on this one. 2KOMPONENTZ! take their inspiration from "1982 & onwards" British punk and and if you're a sucker for that kind of stuff like me, definitely check this out as I've had some of their songs stuck in my head for days now! www.myspace.com/2komponentz

DEATHCAGE - tomorrow we die - 7" - £4
This is some seriously raging stuff from Australia. Their preceeding 7"s were some of the better records I bought in recent months and this new release sure as hell doesn't dissapoint either. It's heavier on the "Burning Spirits"/Japanese hardcore, less on the Discharge, influence this time around with even some hints of NWOBHM guitarwork thrown in for added effect. Lovely looking artwork tops it all of nicely. Take note now or be prepared to pull your hair out in a few months, while reading about them in MRR top 10s. Canadian Rifle are one of the best Chicago bands around according to those in the know and this lp won't have anyone think otherwise. I am pretty sure there are ex-members of Fourth Rotor in the band, or they at least have the singers twin on vocals? Anyway, this is great catchy melodic hardcore punk with good songwriting and those brash F.R. vocals, reminiscent of Leatherface or early Jawbreaker, interlaced perfectly with bleak melodies and urgent drums - www.myspace.com/canadianriffle

Great new band by members of the fra
nkly terrific Facel Vega. A slightly more garagey/punkrock sound but ultimately still reminiscent of a lot of the Revolution Summer era bands as well. Why do these bands live in Leeds? Darren, Rich & I need this kind of stuff down south!

FACEL VEGA/HARBOUR - lp - £7.50 SOLD OUT
...right, Facel Vega are easily one of the best bands in the country right now. Totally killer hardcore punk channeling the energy and sound of Rites Of Spring and other 'Revolution Summer' era bands. Seriously just fucking incredible. Harbour were new to me, but they also play a more melodic brand of hardcore punk, bringing to mind bands like Swiz, Gray Matter, Verbal Assault, Dag Nasty and the 90s bands those insprided. Great split lp, some of the best bands the UK currently has to offer.
